Safariland ALS Paddle Holster

The Safariland ALS Paddle Holster (Model#6378-283-131 reviewed) is considered by Safariland to be a concealable holster. This holster works well under a loose fitting button up shirt or jacket and is good for open carry as well. It holds the pistol tightly and securely to the body. Depending on the model of pistol, it may be harder to hide this under a t-shirt. With my Glock 19 it's obvious that there's something idd riding on your belt when used under a normal T-shirt.

As for security, the holster features a tension screw and an automatic locking system (ALS). I won't get into how this works on an open blog, but it's easily disengaged while acquiring a good shooting grip and is the easiest locking mechanism I've used. The draw and unlocking of the mechanism is very natural and fluid!

This particular model comes with a paddle mount. This paddle, once on a sturdy belt, will not accidentally come off when drawing. I've had this happen before, but I find it almost impossible for this to happen with this paddle. In fact, you have to work a little bit to get it off your side.

The inside of this holster, as many of Safariland holsters are, is lined with suede to help protect your pistol. In some models I've found this makes it hard to draw the handgun... but not in this model.

The finish on this particular model is the STX Tactical; a carbon fiber looking finish is also available.

One nice thing about Safariland holsters is there many interchangeable mounting options. This holster, for example, can be placed on a belt mount, a leg shroud, and a quick release mount that allows you to move it from a MOLLE vest to the thigh or belt.

I really have been impressed with this holster. It's one that won't just get thrown in my holster box of unused holsters. In fact, I've ordered a leg shroud for this holster and will be using it in a Tactical Response "Fighting Rifle" course this summer. I will update this post after that course.

Grassburr mounted leather holster

This review is a follow up to my review of Grassburr's Nylon mountable holster (C-Burr). This version is the leather more custom version. For a full review of the mounting options please see my previous review HERE. But to sum it up...Grassburr holsters can be mounted anywhere you can put a screw or bolt. They can be mounted from the side or the top of the holster. The mounting options are limitless.

The C-burr I reviewed previously was a model that was designed for those that didn't want to spend the extra money on leather. Some wanted a holster that wasn't quite as expensive since it would more than likely be hidden anyway and not worn on the body. The Nylon C-burr is designed as a universal holster which fit small, medium, or large frame autos and revolvers. The leather version is made for your specific make and model of pistol...it's molded for that gun. The leather is of great quality, and drawing the holster is a breeze. The thumbreak is smooth as well. My Glock fits and draws very well from this holster, however if you wish to stretch the holster a bit a good suggestion from the manufacturer is to place a sock over the unloaded pistol and put it in the holster for a while to stretch the leather to give the pistol a little more room. Good thinking.

Overall this holster is a great addition to any pistol you may carry and want to have a unique way to mount it. Grassburr has impressed me with their innovative ideas and they're worth taking a look.

Update: One inprovement in this holster over the nylon is that you can get a good firing grip on the pistol while it's still in the holster. On the nylon version you can't get your hand down between the pistol and the mounting surface enough for a good grip...not so on this holster.

Sure Set Holster Mount

I found this mounting option a short time ago by Sure Set Holster Mounts and thought that it was a very innovative and versatile system to mount your holster anywhere you may want to.

One reason it's so versatile is that it allows you to use whatever holster you want as long as it'll fit a belt from 1 1/4" to 2 1/16". You're not stuck with one specific holster. The way it does this is by providing you with a platform to mount your holster as if it were worn on a belt. All you have to do is slip the holster on to the mount. There are extra pieces of metal included in the package to make the mounting area wider or thicker for different holster styles.

The mounting options are unlimited. The mounting brackets can be adjusted every which way. The place I chose to mount mine was on the side of the bed. I got the package all ready with drill in hand planning on having to put holes in my bed frame to attach the mount. Well...it wasn't anywhere near that difficult. First I got my holster in place on the mount. After I did that I put one of the included bolts in the end of the holster mounting area (that simulates a belt) to be sure the holster didn't slip off the end. I chose to use a Uncle Mike's paddle holster, which worked fine on this mount. Then I found the instructions that inform you of a bed mounting bracket that is included. All you have to do with this bracket is put it in place and attach 3 bolts (2 below the bed frame, and one above it) and that's it. Job done. Wow....very easy. Obviously if you're attaching it to a wall or car or other surface, mounting will be different, but it was that easy with a bed. A nice thing about this is that if I want to use the holster, it just slips off and can be just as easily placed back on.

The holster mount includes all necessary mounting hardware (except wood screws if this is how you plan on mounting it), the bed bracket, and a locking cable (adjustable with the right tools).

This piece of gear is absolutely great. It's quite self explanatory and easy to figure out and work with. If you want to mount your pistol holster somewhere, be it in the car, bedside, on a wall, etc etc... this is a great option to do that. It's made of quality, durable metal and all components seem to be of great quality.

Grassburr Mountable holster

For the longest time my pistol has always been loose in my glove box or center console while driving and not wearing it. I always make sure there's no round in the chamber since it's a Glock and has no manual safety...however, this isn't the safest way to store a pistol. I've always been contemplating a way to carry it in the car in a manner that's designed for car carry. I've thought about how to modify a holster using nylon straps. I recently came across a site selling a mountable holster for use in the car, home, etc, etc.

The site is Grassburr and it is a privately owned business specializing in quality mountable holsters. They came up with a safe secure way to mount your handgun on practically any hard surface. They are very good to work with and friendly people.

Their product line includes both leather and Nylon holsters that mount practically anywhere and are sized for all handguns. They also sell a ATV handle bar rifle rack.

The holster I received is a Nylon medium sized holster called the C-burr (Cordura Burr)which fits my Glock 19 perfectly. This holster came with a adjustable thumb break (via velcro) and is Nylon on the outside and a suede material on the inside. My first impression was that this is a solid, sturdy holster. Options for this holster include 3 sizes for revolvers and semi-autos. Included with the holster are directions for it's use along with a power point CD.


The mounting options include a brass mount for side mounting and top mounting. All mounting hardware (screws, nuts, and bolts) are included. These mounts attach to a brass mount on the top of the holster via a stainless steel thumb screw. This thumb screw makes removing the holster from the wall mount and adjusting the angle easy. Installation is extremely simple. I put the side mount in my Avalanche and the top mount in my wife's van. The side mount has holes for 4 screws and these four held tight on the side of my center console of my truck. I thought that I may need to take the console piece out and use the included bolts and nuts due to the console not having much for the screws to grip to, but the screws held fine. The top mount only has 2 holes for screws and went in fine, but after a couple days of use it started to loosen up. This is not from a faulty design of the holster or mount, just simply because there isn't much for the screws to grip to on the underside of the dashboard where I mounted it. A switch from the screws to the nuts and bolts fixed this problem. Once the mount is installed all it takes is the thumb screw to hold the holster to the mount. The holster can be adjusted for angle and then tighten the thumb screw and you're ready to go.


I mounted the holster on the left side of my center console in my truck (see included pictures). The holster is nice and snug against the console so it's out of the way of my leg when driving. This is a good thing, however, I noticed one weakness to it being mounted like this. Since you can't get your hand too far down the right side of the holster you can't get a good firing grip on the pistol. For me this isn't too much of an issue as this isn't supposed to be a holster made for quick draw. For me it's a safe and easily accessible way of storing your pistol. I will suggest to the company that a spacer be made with an included (longer) thumb screw for those that want to put a little space between the holster and the wall it's mounted to when using the side mount.



If using the top mount, as I did in my wife's van, you can get a good firing grip on the pistol as there are no obstructions to the left or right of the holster. In this mounting application I suggest using the bolts if placing this in a vehicle as it's more likely to be bumped and jarred do to the fact that it's not snug against a wall (unless you mount it close enough to a wall as to not be out in the open).

Grassburr has a holster for everyone. This is just one here that I have evaluated, but they have several options available. Another good thing about Grassburr products is that their mounts and holsters are interchangable. If this holster I have been using is any indication of the quality of all their products then these holsters were made to hold up to daily use. I highly recommend their products and suggest that if you own a pistol you consider one of their products.

Update - 06/30/08: Now being sold at Cheaper Than Dirt. I spoke with the owner and there is the possibility of mounting spacers being available in the future. Possible to be put between the holster and wall mount, but to save on the cost for end users a spacer may be available that will go between the wall mount and the wall itself.
